Concert Orchestra Conductor
The 2010 season marked Ben's 11th season with the Stratford Festival, where he plays for live musical productions and has recorded incidental music for dozens of stage plays. Ben has also recorded for the Walnut Street Theatre in Philidelphia, the Grand Theatre in London and for the Shaw Festival , among others.
Though he is an accomplished performer of "standard " and early cello rep, Ben is perhaps best known as a perfomer of new music and obscure music from the 20th century. He was the featured performer on a disc of new works entitled "Notes Towards" which was nominated in 2009 for a Juno.
Ben is also becoming recognized for other musical endeavours. He was the orchestrator/arranger for Bruce Dow's Stanier award-winning musical "Wilde Tales" as well as conducting the workshop performance.
He has spent several years as a member of the strings faculty at the Ontario Mennonite Music Camp followed by serving as its director for three years. Ben has coached the Junior Strings in the Milwaukee Youth Orchestra and served as music director of the Georgian Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Ben teaches cello and chamber music at the University of Waterloo. He lives in Kitchener with his wife Liz, two cats and a rat named Harry.
