Music Director / Conductor Emeritus

Gregory Burton is an established leader in the fields of music performance and education in Canada. As an orchestral, wind and brass conductor, Mr. Burton has conducted some of the world's finest musicians. He has lead ensembles that have included members of the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, The Vancouver Symphony, The Toronto Symphony, The National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony and Quebec Symphony. Formerly Resident Conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia, he conducted that orchestra in over 250 performances from 1991-2003. Mr. Burton's guest conducting engagements include Symphony New Brunswick, Opera New Brunswick, the McMaster Chamber Orchestra, the University of Toronto Wind and Brass Ensembles, and the Brandon University Orchestra. He has recorded often for both CBC radio and television. Gregory Burton has studied orchestral conducting with some of the most respected conductors of our time, including working for many years with Georg Tintner, the former Music Director of Symphony Nova Scotia. He has studied with Victor Yampolsky and Timothy Russell, and most recently attended conducting classes at the Tanglewood Music Center with Roberto Abbado, Raphael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Michael Morgan, and Robert Spano.

Mr. Burton is currently Music Director of the York Symphony Orchestra and the Mississauga Youth Orchestra. He was Music Director of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra from 1988-2005, where he built an orchestral training program recognized nationally as one of the finest youth orchestra experiences available. He has held conducting positions at Acadia University, McMaster University, Brandon University and at the University of Toronto.

As a trombonist Mr. Burton has performed with many orchestras, including 18 years in Symphony Nova Scotia. He has also performed with the Toronto Symphony, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra. Mr. Burton conducts and performs with the Northumberland Brass which is heard regularly on the CBC radio network. Gregory Burton holds degrees from Northwestern University, Acadia University, and a doctorate in instrumental conducting from Arizona State University. He has served as adjudicator and clinician throughout Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and the U.S.
