The Halton Youth Symphony and the Mississauga Youth Orchestra are pleased to announce that they will be completing a merger of their two organizations in the next few months, with the new entity to be known as the Halton Mississauga Youth Orchestra, or HMYO.
Full operation of the new group will begin in September.
This merger will bring many benefits, including increased membership and growth opportunities, cost savings, and most importantly, the musical benefits that arise from being able to assemble fully-constituted playing ensembles.
Auditions for the 2013-14 season will be held at the end of May.
The time between now and September will include finalizing the many details involved and we will be updating you soon with much more complete information.

Thank you for your interest in the Halton Mississauga Youth Orchestra.

Who can join the HMYO?

Acceptance is by audition and the strength of our reputation attracts players from Mississauga,Burlington, Oakville, the GTA and beyond.

Auditions are held at the end of May each year.  Individual auditions may be arranged during the season at the discretion of the music director.

What are the chances of being accepted?

Acceptance depends on the instrument played and the needs of the HMYO in any given year.

  • The HMYO is a large organization and currently has two different groups which can accommodate string players – at almost any level of skill and experience.  Acceptance of brass, woodwind and percussion musicians depends on available positions and the playing level of the candidates.  It is important to understand that the musical structure of orchestras usually requires only 3-4 of each instrument and auditions for these positions (especially flute and clarinet positions) can be very competitive.

Why do parents have to participate?

The Halton Mississauga Youth Orchestra relies on volunteer leadership to fulfill its mission. All parents are required to complete a volunteer form, identify areas of interest and expertise to assist iin the  operation of the HMYO.
